Clappers are one of the simplest tools in a sewing room, and one of the most useful. Press a seam with a hot, steamy iron, then hold the clapper firmly over it for ten to fifteen seconds. The wood absorbs the heat and steam as it cools, so the seam sets flat instead of springing back up the moment you lift the iron away.
We stock two shapes here, so you can pick whichever suits the job in hand. Both do the same fundamental job — it's the shape that changes which seams they're best at. All five work with steam or dry irons.
The Quilter's Clapper is a flat hardwood square, available in 6" and 9" sizes. It's ideal for pressing big, even areas like borders, sashing, and block intersections in one go.
The Tailor's Clapper is a smooth, rounded beech bar with no sharp edges, available in Small, Medium, and Large. It's better suited to corners, narrow seam allowances, and curved seams like Drunkard's Path blocks or scalloped borders.
Both ranges are built to last, so it's a one-off purchase rather than something you'll need to replace.
If you're not sure where to start, the 6" Quilter's Clapper and the Medium Tailor's Clapper are the two most versatile sizes, and a sensible first purchase if you don't already own one.
