Buying Quilting Fabric by the Metre

Buying quilting fabric cut to length gives you the flexibility to order the amount you need, whether that's a small piece for patchwork or several metres for a quilt border, backing or larger project. Our standard quilting fabrics are sold in ¼ metre increments and, when you order more than one unit of the same fabric, we'll cut it as one continuous piece wherever possible.

When working with fabric cut from the bolt, you'll often come across terms such as width of fabric, selvedge, lengthwise grain and crosswise grain. If you'd like to understand how the way fabric is woven can affect cutting and piecing, our guide What Is Fabric Grain? A Quilter's Guide to Warp, Weft & Bias takes a closer look.

Fabric by the Metre - Frequently Asked Questions

Our standard quilting fabrics are sold in ¼ metre increments, allowing you to order the length you need rather than buying whole metres. Simply increase the quantity on the product page: a quantity of 1 is ¼ metre, 2 is ½ metre, 3 is ¾ metre and 4 is one metre.

For larger amounts, continue increasing the quantity in ¼ metre increments.

Yes. When you order multiple units of the same cut-to-length fabric, we cut them as one continuous length wherever possible. For example, if you order a quantity of 4, you'll receive one continuous metre rather than four separate quarter-metre pieces.

On the rare occasion that we cannot supply the full amount as one continuous piece, we will contact you to determine if the pieces we have will work for your use.

Width of Fabric, often abbreviated to WOF, is the measurement from one selvedge edge to the other. Standard quilting cotton is commonly around 42–44" wide, although the usable width can vary between manufacturers and fabrics.

When you buy fabric cut to length, the amount you order determines the length of your piece, while you receive the full width of the fabric from selvedge to selvedge.

Our cut-to-length fabrics are sold in ¼ metre units. When ordering a single ¼ metre unit, you can choose whether you'd like your fabric cut as a long quarter or a fat quarter.

A long quarter is cut across the full width of the fabric, creating a long, narrow piece. A fat quarter divides the same amount of fabric differently, giving you a shorter, wider and more square-shaped piece that's particularly versatile for patchwork.

If you're ordering more than one ¼ metre unit, your fabric will be supplied as one continuous length across the full width of the fabric.

If you'd prefer ready-cut individual fat quarters or coordinated bundles, you can also browse our Fat Quarter Shop.
