Learn how to make the humble hexagon look extraordinary
Join the lovely Kerry Smith for a fun and inspiring one-day workshop where you’ll explore the art of fussy cutting in English Paper Piecing (EPP). Fussy cutting is the mindful practice of selecting and cutting fabric so that a particular motif, shape, or detail is showcased within your patchwork. The results often look magical, but the technique is simple and accessible—even for complete beginners.
What you’ll learn
Throughout the day, you’ll gain confidence in working with hexagons and develop the skills to create unique, striking EPP blocks. Kerry will guide you through:
- Choosing fabrics that work well for fussy cutting and minimising waste
- Spotting repeats and patterns in fabric designs
- Creating secondary patterns and kaleidoscope effects in your blocks
- How to select and colour match thread
- Mixing fabrics and prints to bring your patchwork to life
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have learned how thoughtful fabric placement can turn simple shapes into something spectacular.
What to bring
You’ll receive a full supply list after booking. We recommend selecting 6–8 fabrics that complement each other and contain at least six repeats of a design—perfect for fussy cutting. Please also bring your usual hand-sewing kit (needles, thread, scissors). If you need anything, our shop is fully stocked with fabrics, papers, and threads to support your project.
