Requirements
We do require that you have some basic knowledge in using a sewing machine (e.g., threading, basic stitching). We will provide an overview on the specific features of our sewing machines in the first class.
Students will need to bring their own fabrics to this class. We recommend the use of 100% cotton fabric in a quilt or craft weight as this will provide better consistency in fabric handling during your learning. If you have a bit of a fabric stash or quilting scraps, please bring these. Alternatively, you can choose to purchase fabric, as a guideline:
-
A 5" charm pack
-
A 10" charm pack
-
A selection of 5 or more quarter metres of fabric
NOTE: We do require you to have the fabrics you will be using in hand before the beginning of class.
Tools and Supplies Provided
- Sewing Machine: We provide a Janome M100 QDC sewing machine, pre loaded with white thread for this course. An overview of this machine's features will be provided at the start of the first class.
You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine, with a spool of white thread, in good working order. We will assume you are knowledgable in the basic use of your own machine and will not be able to provide instruction on its specific features and functionality. - Thread: We will supply white thread if you are using our machine. If you wish to use a thread colour other than white, you will need to bring or purchase Aurifil (or other high quality thread) to use on our machines.
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Ruler and Small Hand tools: We will provide a 45mm rotary cutter, 6" x 12" ruler and A2 cutting mat for your sewing station. Larger rulers and mats will be available for shared use at the cutting station. Small hand tools such as a stitch unpicker and snips will also be at hand.
You are welcome to bring your own tools if you choose. - Ironing Station: We provide our students with an ironing table and irons for shared use. You are welcome to bring a small ironing mat and mini iron if you choose.
