Our Machine Patchwork & Quilting Open Classes are the perfect choice for anyone from absolute beginners to intermediate quilters looking to learn, refine, and grow their skills in a supportive and creative environment. These flexible evening classes are arranged in blocks of five sessions, each 2.5 hours long, and are limited to just six students to ensure plenty of one-to-one rotational instruction tailored to your needs.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or have a project underway, bring your fabric, patchwork, or quilt top to class and focus on the skills and techniques that matter most to you. This unstructured learning style allows you to learn at your own pace, setting your own goals while receiving personalised guidance on everything from accurate cutting, consistent ¼-inch seams, and efficient block construction to machine quilting.
All areas of instruction are around machine patchwork & quilting, including:
- Cutting fabric accurately and safely.
- Acheiving consistant 1/4" seams.
- Block construction techniques and efficiencies, including sub-cutting.
- Perfecting essential patchwork blocks and row assembly.
- Exploring machine quilting, from straight and curved designs to free motion.
- Binding and finishing techniques to give your quilt a beautiful finished look.
This open class setting fosters a fun and relaxed atmosphere where you can work on the projects you love while connecting with like-minded quilters who share your passion. You’ll not only gain new skills but also the confidence to explore your creativity and take on future quilting adventures.

Outcome: Students will learn the skills they desire while working on their project of their choice.
Requirements
For all supplies listed, you are welcome to bring your own or these items can be purchased before the start of the first class:
- Basic skills in using a sewing machine (e.g., threading, basic stitching).
- 45mm Rotary Cutter.
- All the fabric and wadding needed for your specific project.
- Thread snips and a stitch unpicker.
- Any specialty rulers or papers required for your specific project.
Tools and Supplies Provided
- Sewing Machine: We provide a Janome M100 QDC sewing machine, pre loaded with white thread for this course. An overview of this machine's features will be provided at the start of the first class.
You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine in good working order. We will assume you are knowledgable in the basic use of your own machine and will not be able to provide instruction on its specific features and functionality. - Thread: We will supply white thread if you are using our machine. If you wish to use a thread colour other than white, you will need to bring or purchase Aurifil (other high quality thread) to use on our machines.
- Cutting Mat and Ruler: You are required to have you own rotary cutter. We will provide a 6" x 12" ruler and A2 cutting mat for your sewing station. Larger rulers and mats will be available for shared use at the cutting station.
You are welcome to bring your own rulers and cutting mat if you choose. - Ironing Station: We provide our students with an ironing table and irons for shared use. You are welcome to bring a small ironing mat and mini iron if you choose.
