Matilda's Own

Why We Stock Matilda's Own

We handle hundreds of metres of wadding every month from multiple brands. Matilda's Own consistently stands out for one simple reason: roll-to-roll reliability.

Made in Australia by family-run Victorian Textiles, it's thoughtfully produced with higher fibre density, mechanical needle punching, minimal shrinkage, and rigorous testing. No cost-cutting compromises. No variability. Just consistent quality.

These aren't marketing claims - they're manufacturing choices we've verified firsthand.

What Makes Matilda's Own Different

- Higher Fibre Density - 150gsm for scrim, 170gsm for scrim-free (versus typical 130gsm). More fibre means better support, less shifting, longer-lasting quilts. Scrim-free can be quilted up to 6" apart.

- Needle-Punched Structure - Mechanically interlocked fibres rather than chemical bonding agents. Minimal processing, natural behaviour.

- Minimal Shrinkage: Prewashed and preshrunk. Expect no shrinkage with proper care (cool/cold wash, air dry).

- Rigorously Tested: Every batch washed 50 times to ensure durability. Independent CSIRO testing confirms stability.

- Australian Made: Victoria-based production with locally sourced fibres: Australian wool, Queensland cotton, carefully selected polyester blends.

Yes, all Matilda's Own batting is machine washable. Wash in cool/cold water on gentle cycle and air dry. Each batch is tested through 50 consecutive washes for durability. Expect minimal to no shrinkage.

Scrim wadding includes a fine mesh layer for stability and allows an increase in the distance between quilt lines. Matilda's Own scrim-free uses higher fibre content (170gsm) and mechanical needle punching to increase the stability and allow quilt lines up to 6" apart, ideal for modern designs with larger open areas. For a deeper dive into choosing between scrim and scrim-free wadding, read our article Wadding: To Scrim or Not To Scrim.

Matilda's Own may cost slightly more than some alternatives, you're getting genuinely higher fibre content (not shrinkflation), rigorous quality testing, and consistent performance. The extra density means better structure and longer-lasting quilts. We've discontinued some brands due to quality variability - investing in reliable wadding saves frustration and ensures your finished quilt behaves as expected.

Matilda's Own is made by a family-run Australian company that focuses on quality over marketing. They don't have the advertising budgets of larger multinational brands, and their reach into the UK market is more recent. However, it's Australia's most trusted wadding brand and increasingly recognized by UK quilters who've tried it. We're working with our supplier to expand availability because the quality speaks for itself.
This is Australia's most popular wadding for good reason. Victorian Textiles uses ultra-fine micro denier polyester engineered to mimic wool's crimp and elasticity, so the blend behaves like pure wool but with added stability and easier care. It's warm, forgiving to quilt (great for beginners), doesn't beard, and machine washes beautifully. The 60/40 ratio gives you wool's thermal properties with polyester's durability.
