Curious about free motion quilting but not sure where to begin? Join Kerry Keeble for a supportive, beginner-friendly workshop designed to take the fear out of Free Motion Quilting (FMQ). This one-day class starts right at the beginning, giving you a calm, practical introduction to moving your quilt freely under the needle and creating beautiful stitched designs without a walking foot.
Free Motion Quilting puts you in full control — where you stitch, how you move, and the marks you make. With clear guidance and plenty of time to practise, you’ll learn how simple movements can be combined to create flowing, decorative quilting patterns.
What you’ll learn
This workshop focuses on building strong foundations and confidence at the machine. Kerry will guide you through:
- How to set up your sewing machine for free motion quilting
- Preparing your fabric and quilt sandwich
- Practising a variety of beginner-friendly stitch motifs and shapes
- Choosing threads suitable for free motion quilting
- Developing rhythm, flow, and confidence through play and repetition
What to bring
Sewing machines will be provided for the class, allowing everyone to work with the same setup and focus fully on learning the technique. Please bring a sketchbook for doodling ideas, and a sense of curiosity. This class is all about learning through hands-on practice in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
